Striker Ben Fawcett was thrilled to celebrate his final home game for Haverfordwest County before moving to Australia with a goal, as the Bluebirds saw off Llanelli Town 3-0 at the Ogi Bridge Meadw in the JD Cymru Premier on Boxing Day.
The forward’s goal inside the final 20 minutes rounded off a comprehensive victory for County, as he netted his 54th goal for the club to ensure the perfect send-off.
Fawcett made his first team debut all the way back in 2018, racking up over 250 appearances in that time, and he is certain that the team can continue to kick on in the years to come.
Here’s what the striker had to say in full after the game:
On the game
For the first 30 minutes, I thought the boys were class. I thought we created a lot of chances. I think we had three, maybe four clear-cut chances, the keeper made a good save, but I just thought as soon as that first goal went in we were always going to win that game, and thankfully we got three past them.
On gaining revenge
We played them away twice, and I think we’ve always been on top against them, but they just seem to get the break, get that first goal and then get that late second goal that kills it. But today, they didn’t even have a clear-cut chance really, and I thought we were always going to be the winners. As I said, it was nice to get three past them, not just a one-nil, a nice hammering, and good goals as well.
On the rest of the season
If we get top six, obviously I’m not here now, but I wish the boys all the best, and that seventh spot is always up for grabs. We’ve done it once before, I don’t see why we can’t do it again, and we’ve just got to pick up results like Flint last week when we’re down 2-0, we’ve done that a few times this year. So we’ve just got to keep picking up points, winning at home and you never know what can happen.
On his favourite memories
Obviously the first European tour, and the second one, they’re memories that are going to stay with me for my whole life. Obviously my debut as well when I made my first appearance at 18 I think, so it’s my eighth season now, time to maybe move on, but I’ve loved every minute of my time with the club. I’m still enjoying my football this year, it’s just a different opportunity that’s come up and I’m going to see what happens. You never know, you might see me back here.
On how the club has changed
It’s got a lot more professional. I think when we were in the Cymru South we were close a few years, but getting promoted and then when we did, we had a good first season. I think we finished eighth, maybe even seventh. So we had a good first season and just brought in players from away, the Cardiff boys, Swansea boys, and now a lot more local boys as well. So it’s good to see and the club’s heading in the right direction.
We’ve got a lot of youngsters on that bench as well, and youngsters playing, so we’re only going to get stronger. So as I said, I wish them all the best. I’m going to keep track of it on my phone when I’m away, but good luck to the boys and good luck to Tony and all the staff as well.
