Haverfordwest County AFC are delighted to confirm that Rhys Abbruzzese has agreed a new one-year contract with the club.

A firm favourite with Bluebirds supporters, Rhys – who is affectionately known as ‘Dave’ – has made over 90 appearances for the club since joining ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The left wing-back has been an integral part of the Town’s success in recent seasons, and most recently featured in Sunday’s JD Cymru Premier European play-off final win over Caernarfon Town at the Ogi Bridge Meadow, as County sealed a second continental qualification in three years.

Despite injuring his wrist in the early stages of the 2022-23 European play-off final win at Newtown, Rhys went on to play a crucial role in our memorable UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying campaign, and remarkably played to such a high standard throughout the 2023-24 campaign that he earned himself a place in the JD Cymru Premier Team of the Season.

Having missed the opening couple of months of the season just gone to recover from having surgery on his wrist, Rhys returned to action in style when his second goal sealed a 2-0 victory away at Bala Town at the start of October

He would go on to feature a further 20 times across all competitions, with his exciting, attack-minded style of play delighting Bluebirds supporters as the team went on to have a record-breaking season, finishing third in the table for the first time since 2004 and booking our return to Europe this summer.

Commenting on the news, manager Tony Pennock said: “Rhys has played a pivotal role in our success as a club over the three seasons I’ve worked with him.

“He continues to be one of the most exciting players in the Cymru Premier and we are very grateful to have someone of Rhys’ quality signing again.

“It shows that he is enjoying his football, and we all look forward to another season together.

“‘Dave’ is an extremely popular member of our squad, and his attributes are vital to the way myself and Gary want our team to play.”

Upon signing his new contract, Rhys said: “I’m looking forward to another chapter of more memories.

“After qualifying for Europe twice in the three years I’ve been here, it shows the ambition that Tony and Rob have for the club.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have some of my best years at the club, and I’m now looking forward to another season and European adventure.”
