Well, wasn’t that a hell of a weekend. A hell of a season, really.
I think everybody inside the club felt the dynamic was really strong and that we were capable of something special this season. Football does tend to have a way to ground you to reality, but something special is definitely what has happened.
Firstly, the Development team, what can I say. To be the first academy side to win a treble and for us to qualify for the UEFA Youth League for the first time to compete with some of the best young sides in Europe is something quite incredible. They followed up on last season’s Development South league success and took it one step further.
Ceri Phillips and his coaching team deserve huge plaudits for what they have achieved, as does Steve Batty for overseeing the development of a lot of these players over the years alongside a great coaching set up the club has had in the time I’ve been here.
It shows the level of talent in Pembrokeshire, and we really want to continue to give a platform for them to shine and offer many opportunities for them to develop inside and outside the game.
Alongside the success of the Development team, the academy as a whole is in a great place, and under the leadership of Mikey Loveridge, the girls programme is making huge strides.
In what was the second part of a ‘Carlsberg’ weekend, to see our first team qualify for Europe for the second time in three years was something special.
After a record-breaking campaign and highest finish in over 20 years, we thoroughly deserved European football. Two seasons ago we took advantage of the play off system to qualify from 7th place, but to win it this year at home in front of a capacity crowd was even more memorable.
Tony, Waggy and the coaching team have created history again, and deserve this success so much for what they have done for the club over the last few years on and off the pitch. The players were outstanding on Sunday, as they have been all season, and haven’t let the club down on a single occasion. With many already signed for next season I hope we can continue this momentum.
Off the pitch we continue to make strides under Beccy Nuttall’s leadership with a fantastic new playing surface, further exposure with the Union of European Clubs, and a clear community and social development plan in place. We want to continue raising the profile of Haverfordwest and the work we do outside of football.
A huge thank you to all staff and volunteers at the club, my Board, partners and sponsors, fans, and everybody that has supported the club over the last 12 months.
We are all looking forward to a few weeks rest, but equally excited for a very busy summer as we prepare for another European campaign.
Thanks for your support.
Diolch and Uppa Blues.
