Haverfordwest County AFC assistant manager Gary Richards was pleased with the way the team competed against Bala Town on Friday night, as the Bluebirds claimed an impressive 2-0 victory at Maes Tegid.

Two second half goals from Ben Fawcett and Rhys Abbruzzese saw the Town earn their first victory at Bala for four years, a result which lifted us to second place in the table.

The win means County’s unbeaten streak extends to four matches, as we kept a seventh clean sheet in 11 league outings to date.

Here’s what the assistant manager had to say in full after the game:

On the result

We know how tough it is coming here. Over the years it’s been very, very difficult to get a result, so today is really pleasing. We thought we shaded the first half definitely, and we had to withstand a little bit of pressure second half, which you would expect coming to a place like Bala. But no, really pleased. We’re really pleased with the way the boys defended, and the two goals especially. Bala are very good at that [the physical approach], so to compete with them, we know we’re doing something right.

On Ben Fawcett’s goal

Ben has worked tremendously hard. He works hard for the team. So that’s probably been [a goal] the only little thing missing. So I’m really delighted for Ben today that he’s scored that goal. And it was a special goal as well.

On players returning from injury

We know how influential Rhys [Abbruzzese] has been for us, so it’s certainly pleasing getting him back into the squad today. To have him and Dylan [Rees] come back into a team that’s been doing well, it can only be positive for us.

On another clean sheet

I said last week that we’re certainly better this season at making teams work for any opportunities they get, and at the moment we’re certainly on a good run with clean sheets. The goal is to be in a better position than we were last season. We certainly are at the moment.

On next week’s challenge

Never mind if Connah’s Quay are top of the league or lower down, we know they will come to Carmarthen next week and be a tough opposition. So we have to be ready.
