Manager Tony Pennock was delighted with his team’s second half display in the 5-1 win over Briton Ferry Llansawel yesterday, as the Bluebirds netted four times after the break to claim a comfortable victory over the Reds.
The Town fell behind when Tom Walters struck to give the visitors the lead five minutes before half time, but Ben Ahmun scored the first of a brace just three minutes later to ensure it was 1-1 at the break.
County turned on the style after the restart, scoring four goals in the space of 12 manic minutes to put the result well beyond doubt and give the 500+ supporters who braved the cold and wet weather plenty to cheer about.
Here’s what the manager had to say in full after the game:
On the result
I thought the boys were excellent. First half we started okay, just our quality wasn’t quite there in terms of attempts at goal, balls in the box and through balls. But then second half it all clicked really, and we just scored those four goals in the space of 15 minutes or so. It’s just testament to the lads and how good they can be when they concentrate and do things to the level that I know they can.
On the importance of the squad
I think today really showed the strength of our squad. I think it was what, five changes from the team that played on Wednesday, and the same team played on Boxing Day at Newtown and got us two good wins and two clean sheets. So it was important today that other people had an opportunity.
The squad is strong at the moment and everybody needs to play their part, and the boys understand that. It’s not easy for me, but I’d rather have these decisions than the ones I’ve had in the past where I’m struggling, scraping around to find people to be on the bench on a matchday because we’ve had so many injuries. Now we’re leaving two out from the squad every week, and it’ll be the same next week. The boys understand that. They come training with the right attitude, they work hard in training because everybody wants to play and then they just have to give me a problem to pick a team then.
On scoring five goals
We’ve been on top before and not got the second goal a number of times this season, and then because we’ve defended so well we’ve won a few games 1-0 along the way, or 2-1, but today it was a big thing because it’s the first time we’ve come from behind and won a game of football this season. When we’ve gone behind previously we’ve lost the game, so to do that today was important, and to do it in the manner we did as well, in fairness Will Fuller’s made a number of saves there, so it could have been a few more goals.
But if you’d offered me 5-1 before the start of the game then I’d have snapped your hands off, and to only have conceded 10 goals in 21 games is a fantastic achievement by the lads. We should be extremely proud of that with one game left in Phase One, and we look forward to a tough test at Barry because they’re still pushing for the top six. We know it’ll be a game that they have to win really, looking at the table, so it’ll be a tough game next week no doubt about it.
On making it three wins in a row
It’s always good [winning in different ways], we grind out results and win, and this afternoon’s second half was a very good performance. I’d rather win games 5-1 than 1-0, but at the same time three points is the most important thing and we’ve done that again today.
11 wins in 21 games, it’s a fantastic achievement. Only four defeats and only once so far this season we’ve conceded more than one goal in a game. It just shows how hard the boys are working, whoever starts, whoever comes off the bench, they all understand their roles and responsibilities and long may that continue.
On the brilliant attendance
500 plus people here again today on a really bad day is fantastic. The Pembrokeshire League was back playing today as well, so that always has a bearing on our attendance, but 500 plus here again, it just shows the hard work the club is putting in off the pitch. We do our job on the pitch, but there are a lot of people who work hard behind the scenes who don’t get the credit they deserve to get people through the gates – it’s something really important.
Myself, Waggy, the staff and all the boys really appreciate it because maybe our performance first half was a bit disappointing, but the boys bounced back and got that equalising goal, and we went on second half to give them something that they enjoyed watching which is important.
