Rhys Abbruzzese said he was delighted to play a key role in Haverfordwest County’s 2-0 success over Aberystwyth Town at the Ogi Bridge Meadow on Friday night.
The wing-back provided the assist for Dan Hawkins’ opening goal, and was involved in everything good for the Bluebirds as he turned in a man-of-the-match display to continue his impressive campaign for the Town.
His performances across the season to date saw him earn a first call-up to the Cymru C squad for the game with England C in Llanelli on Tuesday night, and the 25-year-old was at his attacking best on the night to help County to victory.
Here’s what Rhys had to say in full after the game:
On the result
“Like we said in the changing room just then, hopefully those three points kicks us on now and we get a few more for the end of the season.
“We would probably have liked to get one or two more goals, but we’ll take the three points most importantly and, like I said, hopefully that’ll kick us on and we can get a few more wins under our belt.”
On the red card
“If anything, I think we were probably playing a bit better before the red card, and we had a funny 10 minutes after that then. We probably weren’t at our best, but I think we settled down then, we made simple passes and killed the game off at 2-0 really.”
On the challenge of playing Aber
“To be honest, we didn’t really feel as if we would have conceded today, but we know the teams around us now, they’re all tough games, they’re all fighting for the same thing. It’s always going to be tough against Aber, wherever we play them, but I think today was quite comfortable in the fact that when they had the man sent off and the 2-0, it kind of killed the game.”
On his assist
“It was a great header, although I’m not sure if he meant that one! But we talked about getting it wide, especially when they went down to 10, 2-v-1s and getting balls into the box where anything can happen. So Dan getting a head on it, it was a great header to be fair. It went in and we kind of settled then, going into the half 1-0.”
On adapting to the circumstances
“I kind of played a bit higher in the first half, second half I was trying to play a bit deeper, get on the ball and try to make something happen from there because they were sat off. It was different playing in a four at the back today, but I play anywhere that’s asked of me.”
On his Cymru C call-up
“I’m happy to get a call up for the first time, and I’m just going to go and enjoy the experience and see what happens. It’s nice to be alongside Jenks as well, I’m not sure about having in my room, but of course it’s nice with Jenks as well.”
