Haverfordwest County’s five-game unbeaten run was brought to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Penybont in the JD Cymru Premier on Tuesday evening.

The Bluebirds came into the game with confidence on the back of Saturday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff Metropolitan University, but goals from Nathan Wood and Billy Borge were enough for the hosts to claim all three points.

Alhagi Touray Sisay pulled a goal back in added time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat at the SDM Glass Stadium.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent in the first-half, but struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities, with Lewis Harling and Sam Snaith going closest for the Bont, while Danny Williams had a shot from the edge of the area deflected behind.

The second-half was a different story. The hosts began with intent and went close through Keane Watts, whose shot from a tight angle just evaded the near post, before Borge headed onto the right post from James Waite’s cross.

Rhys Griffiths’ side took the lead nine minutes into the second period when Jazz Richard’s header fell into Wood’s path, allowing the winger to shoot on the half volley, from the edge of the area, into the right corner.

Wood went close to adding a second goal a few minutes later, but Wojciech Gajda got down well to save his shot from the edge of the box.

The Bont doubled their lead with just over 15 minutes remaining when Borge stabbed the ball home from close range after the ball had fallen to his feet following a corner.

The result sees the Bluebirds remain in 10th position in the JD Cymru Premier.

Wayne Jones’ side are next in action on Saturday (October 16) when they host Bala Town in the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup.
