Goals from Ben Fawcett and Kieran Lewis helped Haverfordwest County to an impressive 2-0 win over Cardiff Metropolitan University at Cyncoed Campus.

The Bluebirds went close to taking an early lead after just nine minutes, when Alhagi Touray Sisay – who this week extended his stay with the club until the end of the season – squared the ball to Fawcett, whose first-time effort struck the left post.

Touray Sisay was involved again just a minute later when he was played in one-on-one with Archers goalkeeper Alex Lang, who denied the striker from close range before the ball was cleared to safety.

Danny Williams’ shot from outside the area was the visitors’ only other chance of the opening period, with Jazz Richards making a vital intervention at the back post to clear a dangerous squared ball across the face of goal.

Wayne Jones’ side began the second-half as they did the first, on the front foot, as Fawcett’s shot flew just wide.

The Bluebirds continued to apply pressure with Touray Sisay again played in one-on-one, with Archers stopper Lang again equal to his effort to keep the game goalless.

The Students went close to taking the lead when Liam Warman shot just wide from close range.

This was a wake up call for County, and 10 minutes later they went ahead when Lang’s goal kick was headed back in his direction by Touray Sisay, allowing Fawcett to latch onto the ball before firing an excellent effort from outside the area into the bottom left corner for his fifth league goal of the season.

The goal was no more than the Bluebirds deserved, and they continued to press forward in search of a second which would put the game beyond doubt.

With just over five minutes remaining, they found the net again after a brilliant counter-attack resulted in Touray Sisay sliding a ball through to Lewis, who took a touch and shot past Lang into the left corner to put the seal on the win.

The victory sees the Bluebirds climb out of the relegation zone and up to 10th place in the JD Cymru Premier.
