A tough evening saw the Bluebirds beaten by a good Penybont side on a cold night at the Bridge Meadow.
Fresh off the Bala victory, the Bluebirds returned to football with a disappointing performance that meant all 3 points went home with the visitors. Injury forced Kieran Lewis out of the matchday squad, who was replaced by hero of the weekend Jack Wilson.
The opening exchanges were cagey with very few chances of note for either side. The first real chance of the game fell to Danny Williams; Daniel Summerfield played an exquisite pass, similar to that against Bala, to set Danny Williams one-on-one, but after he controlled well the ball was fired high over the goal without troubling the Penybont goalkeeper.
This was as good as it got for the Bluebirds as Penybont then scored twice before half time. A corner dropped to Dan Jeffries at the back post, who had time to bring the ball down, take on a Bluebirds defender and finish into the net despite the best efforts of Ricky Watts on the line. Then, just before half time Oliver Dalton scored a spectacular volley from a cross down the Penybont left to make it 2-0.
The Bluebirds came out fighting in the second half after a double half time substitution. There were many half chances and set pieces for the home side during the early period of the first half but the ball never quite dropped for the Bluebirds to find a way through. The game grew scrappy again which favoured the away side.
Steve Hall pulled of a fantastic save to deny a Penybont 3rd when the ball was whipped across the box. Marcus Griffiths latched on to a short back header but his shot was well saved by the Penybont keeper. Then it was game over in the 83rd minute as a Penybont attack was well defended but the ball fall to Rhys Griffiths who finished under Steve Hall. Jack Wilson was a bright spark down the left all evening but his work never resulted in a goal, despite his best efforts.
Then, in the 89th minute, the Bluebirds failed to clear the ball and lost possession in the penalty area. The ball was lofted into the box and Rhys Griffiths headed home to finish the scoring. A frustrating evening for the Bluebirds who will now look to bounce back.
We now travel to Flint Town United on Saturday (10th Oct) for a 2.30pm kick off.
